    1. I do not remember how I came across this book. It is in a genre that I have been reading more of over the last two years. It is catholic fiction, and it is marketed more towards the young adult audience. The book is in part written in homage to Narnia, and one of the main characters was reading it to the other. The book does have that Narnia feel to it. It has that classic good vs evil plot. The two main characters are both teenagers. First, we have Evangeline - Evie, who has just learned that s [...]

    2. Verdict: A wholesome pick for teensThe Arrow Bringer by Lisa Mayer follows adopted Evie, who learns she has terminal leukemia, and is then approached by the Arrow Bringer (a Christ figure). He asks her to save the magical land of Alethia by stopping her biological father from destroying the golden arrow that protects the land. Evie refuses, until she sees a vision of her best friend Shawn, badly injured in Alethia. She journeys there to help Shawn, and maybe even to restore peace to a land under [...]

    3. I love The Arrow Bringer by Lisa Mayer and can’t wait for her to write the sequel! Mayer’s strong writing style and fantastic character development drew me in immediately. Filled with betrayal, repentance, and forgiveness, this fantasy story has well-developed and interesting characters, beautiful setting details, and fantastic chapter endings that force you to turn the page. Main character Evangeline and her family discover that she has leukemia and not long to live. While attempting to cli [...]

    4. If your teens enjoy the Narnia books or The Lord of the Rings, this might be the book for them. The Arrow Bringer is an adventurous fantasy with non-stop action and likable characters.

    5. Although I'm not a fan of allegory or fantasy of any kind, I liked the premise of this story. The teenage protagonist is dying of an all-too-common form of cancer, and she is adopted. That caught my attention and made me want to find out how her sad circumstances would play into her adventure. The author gave more background information in places than I think the reader needed; some of it could've been worked in more gradually. And most YA I read has a crisper writing style, but as I mentioned, [...]
